We All Need Help from time to time, that is normal.

Counselling provides a safe, impartial and confidential space in which to explore worries. It is an opportunity to talk openly and privately to an experienced Counsellor who is not a friend, teacher or family member. This allows for an objective and respectful view of the thoughts and feelings that are shared. This unique relationship can often help to explore and acquire a different understanding and skills to manage difficult feelings and situations.

All of us at some point in our lives will experience times when things feel overwhelming and we feel unable to cope. These feelings often impact on other areas of our life for example family life, friendships and academic studies. We can feel helpless and unmotivated and not living our lives in a fulfilling way. This may be the time to seek out a Counsellor.

Counselling can help to explore and reflect upon feelings such as anger, grief, anxiety and loneliness which can lead to upset and low mood especially if this is experienced for a long period of time without change. Counselling can help explore and work towards resolving these difficulties. When asked how to describe ‘Counselling’ it will vary by an individuals experience but in general, it is a self development/self awareness process people seek when they want to change something in their lives that is not working well or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

A counsellor is not there to sit you down and tell you what to do. Instead, they will encourage you to talk about what’s bothering you in order to uncover any root causes and identify your specific ways of thinking. The counsellor may then look to create a plan of action to either help you reconcile your issues, or help you to find ways of coping.

Each counselling session lasts for up to 50 minutes, however some people find this is a little overwhelming and you do not have to stay the full 50 minutes if you would prefer to have a shorter session. the first meeting with the counsellor is an assessment session and provides you with an opportunity to discuss and explore issues you wish to work through and what you hope to achieve from the Counselling relationship.

Sometimes one or two sessions will be enough for you; sometimes the Counsellor will suggest a limited number of sessions, we generally work in blocks of up to six sessions which occur weekly to begin with. This could change to every two weeks if this is what works better. Sometimes a young person might access 6 sessions of Counselling and then have a break and return at a later date this is fine too.
